The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball has named RedHawks infielder Leo Piña as the Pointstreak Batter of the Week for the week of June 20-26. This is the second straight week in which Piña has won the award, making him the first player to win back-to-back AAPB Batter of the Week awards since 2008. Pointstreak is the official statistician of the American Association.
Piña is currently batting .401 with 57 hits and 13 doubles on the year for the RedHawks. His .401 AVG currently leads the league for the best batting average so far this season.
The St. Louis Cardinals signed the Venezuelan native as a free agent in 2010. He joined the RedHawks in 2018 after spending seven seasons in the lower leagues with the Cardinals' organization. This is Piña’s fifth season with Fargo-Moorhead.
Over his last six games, Piña hit 11-for-21 (.560) with six extra-base hits, seven RBI, and two home runs. Fargo-Moorhead went 5-1 over that stretch and leads the AAPB with a 29-11 record. This is the third straight week in which a Fargo-Moorhead batter has been named the Pointstreak Batter of the Week. Infielder Drew Ward won the week of June 5-12.
The RedHawks (29-11) begin a three-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes (22-17) tomorrow night at Shaw Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba (CA). All three games are set to start at 6:30 p.m.
