Canaries rally to top RedHawks

FARGO — The Sioux Falls Canaries (40-39) fell behind early but rallied late to win 12-10 over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field. 

Despite the loss, the RedHawks (41-37) still sit in third place in the American Association’s West Division. They are 3.5 games behind the division leading Kansas City Monarchs, and two games behind the second place Winnipeg Goldeyes. The RedHawks currently hold a 1.5-game lead over fourth place Sioux Falls. 

Four different RedHawks had multi-hit days. Eric Filia went 4-for-5 with a double while Dillon Thomas went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Juan Fernandez had three singles and drove in five runs and Jose Sermo had his fourth straight game with two hits.  

Tyler Jandron started on the mound and tossed three innings, allowing two runs. Kahler Key pitched three innings in relief, along with innings from Mason Pelio, Parker Harm, and Jon Beymer. 

Sioux Falls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first. An RBI single from Dillon Thomas tied it in the bottom half of the inning, then a Juan Fernandez single to center field cleared the bases to grab a 4-1 lead.  

Both teams would trade runs over the next five innings, culminating in a 7-5 lead heading into the seventh inning for Fargo-Moorhead.  

The Canaries finished the contest strong, tying the game with a two-run shot in the seventh by Michael Curialle. They pushed across two more runs in the eighth to take the lead and put up three more in the ninth to extend their lead to five.  

The RedHawks tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Sioux Falls closer Charlie Hasty worked the final out needed to end the game.  

The RedHawks and Canaries battle again on Sunday with the series tied at one game apiece. First pitch at Newman Outdoor Field is set for 1 p.m.
