RedHawks split doubleheader with Goldeyes

FARGO — The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks split their doubleheader with the Winnipeg Goldeyes, taking Game 1 but dropping Game 2 on Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field. 

Game 1 was a continuation of a game played between the two teams on June 15 suspended due to rain. The game resumed in the fourth inning with the RedHawks leading 11-1 and finished with a score of 17-7.  

Juan Fernandez finished 4-for-6 in Game 1 with four singles and two RBI. Jose Sermo and Dillon Thomas both hit home runs and drove in four runs each. Matt Kroon entered as a replacement when the game resumed and drove in three runs, coming from a solo home run and a two-run double. Tripp Clark, Aidan Byrne and Jesus Lujano all had multi-hit days as well. 

Bryce Brassfield continued the game after pitching the first three innings in June, finishing with a final line of 5.2 innings pitched and six strikeouts over 124 total pitches. 

Jon Beymer and Kahler Key held the Goldeyes scoreless over the final 10 outs, combining for three strikeouts.  

Winnipeg opened the scoring quickly in Game 2, posting four runs over the first two innings. They tacked on four runs over the final four innings to finish off an 8-0 win.  

Winnipeg starter Aidan Newton tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just seven baserunners.  

The RedHawks move to 49-45 on the season and sit in third place in the West Division. Kansas City leads the way at 55-39 and Winnipeg is three games behind at 52-42. Sioux City and Sioux Falls are tied for fourth place, but Sioux Falls currently holds the playoff spot due to a tiebreaker. 

The RedHawks will look to take control of the series on Wednesday, when they host the Goldeyes for Game 3 of their four-game set. First pitch at Newman Outdoor Field is set for 7:02 p.m.
